Laugarnesskóli is located at Kirkjuteigur 24 in Reykjavík and is a single-session primary school for children in 1st-6th grade. The school's motto is joy for life, learning, cooperation, care, and desire. The school is located at the outskirts of Laugardalur and it's very close to Laugardalslaug Pool, Reykjavík Family Park & Zoo, the Botanic Garden, Laugardalshöll Arena, Laugardalsvöllur Stadium, the skating rink, and the Þróttur/Ármann sport area. School council

A school council serves as a consultation forum between the principal and school community on school operations, and such a council must operate at every primary school. The school council helps define the school's overall strategy and shape its unique character. Among other things, the council addresses the following topics:

The school curriculum

Annual operational plan

Operating budget

When major changes to school operations are under consideration, the school council issues an official statement on the matter before a final decision is made. The school council also oversees student safety, facilities and general welfare. The council is composed of nine members serving two-year terms:

Two teacher representatives

One other staff representative from the school

Two student representatives

Two parent representatives

Principal

One member from the school's local community

The principal leads the school council, is responsible for its establishment, and is required to convene a joint meeting between the school council and the student association board at least once a year.

Primary school meals

School meals are free for the 2025-2026 school year. However, the school still needs to track information about allergies and intolerances and limit food waste. Students must register for the school lunch program as before.

Students registered last year will be automatically enrolled. Others need to register. Change the registration at matur.vala.is.

Parent cooperation

We are all in this together, and as the proverb goes it takes a village to raise a child. Reykjavík City schools make targeted efforts to consult with parents and enhance their involvement in schooling. Every Reykjavík City school has an active parent association.

School rules

Laugarnesskóli emphasizes collaboration among all staff to build a positive work environment and resolve conflicts peacefully, with tolerance and respect for everyone. In recent years, the school has implemented a comprehensive PBS discipline system. This system aims to involve all school staff in shaping and maintaining desirable behavior. To achieve this, it's important that everyone respects others as they do themselves and doesn't disrupt others' work.

A primary school is both a place of learning and a second home for students. All primary school students have the right to education suited to their needs in a stimulating learning environment with appropriate facilities that consider their needs and general well-being. Every student has the right to learn in a peaceful and safe environment. Students also have the right to express their views.

In keeping with their age and maturity, students are responsible for their own conduct and interactions. Students must follow instructions from teachers and staff in all school-related matters, abide by school rules, and treat staff and fellow students with common courtesy and respect.

  • We celebrate what is done well and work together to improve where we fall short.
  • We treat others the way we want to be treated.

Good conduct indoors

Students must take good care of the school building and grounds, respect established rules, and follow staff instructions. Students and staff are expected to behave with courtesy and to respect their surroundings at all times.

  • We greet and bid farewell to one another politely, showing mutual respect in both words and actions.
  • In stairways and hallways, we always walk on the right side.
  • We move quietly through the school building.
  • Everyone helps ensure shared work areas remain calm and conducive to learning.
  • We wait in line until it is our turn.
  • Outerwear belongs on hooks, and shoes should be arranged neatly.

Good conduct in the cafeteria

  • We walk in line from the classroom to the cafeteria.
  • Once inside, we wait in line until it is our turn.
  • We sit properly while eating.
  • During meals, we keep noise to a minimum.
  • When we finish eating, we tidy up after ourselves and return to the classroom or head outside for recess.

Good conduct outdoors

Student interactions during outdoor time should reflect a spirit of community, consideration, and respect for the environment, classmates, and school staff.

  • We show consideration for others during recess.
  • We take good care of the tree cover and playground equipment.
  • Everyone respects the right of others to be left in peace.
  • As soon as the school bell rings, we come inside.
  • We throw snow only in designated play areas.
  • Bikes, scooters, and inline skates are set aside during recess.
  • If we notice someone breaking school rules, we report it to a staff member.

Students must stay on school grounds during recess and remain in designated areas. Ball courts are assigned according to a set system, and students must respect others' right to use them. When the school bell rings, games must stop so students can go inside. Students are expected to go outside during recess. If a student needs to stay indoors for any reason, parents may request this by submitting a written request to the homeroom teacher.

Good conduct on school trips

Laugarnesskóli's school rules apply on all trips. Students represent the school on all school-organized trips. They are expected to follow the same rules on trips as they do at school. Should a student be unable to join a planned field trip or school excursion for any reason, they are expected to attend school and take part in regular school operations. Students and parents/guardians will receive timely information about planned trips and field trips. Written consent from a parent or guardian is required for any school trip involving an overnight stay. When a student has been referred to school administrators for a rule violation, the decision on whether that student may participate in a school trip rests with school administrators, made in consultation with the homeroom teacher. School staff must always arrange proper supervision or instruction for the student while the trip takes place, and parents/guardians must be notified of the reasons and arrangements in place. If a student violates school rules or national laws while on a school-organized trip, they will be sent home at their parents'/guardians' expense.

School evaluation

The goal of evaluating and monitoring quality is to provide insight into schooling, its outcomes, and its development.

School catchments

There are several school catchments in Reykjavík and each child has priority in their catchment school. Nevertheless, all parents have the choice to apply to any school in the city for their children according to the rules on school catchments, applications, and admission. Here is information on which streets belong to Laugarnesskóli's school catchment.
